How to import a wheel loader?

If you want to import a used wheel loader take care for some important points.

1) Chose the used wheel loader from the source where you want to purchase it. If you don't know yet where to look for machines have a look to www.used-equipment.de for machinery offers. There you can find various sources for construction machines. To select the best brand it is not enough to look just for the quality. An important question is always how far the next parts store and service provider is.

 2) Negotiate price of the loading shovel, delivery and payment terms Tactically I would recommend to ask at first step for machine price in "as is" condition. Then I would ask what kind of repairs are required and how much these will cost to get the wheel loader in sustaining condition. Better than talking from the beginning about best possible machine price I would try to get the price a bit under pressure by including the repairs and delivery to port. This way you help the dealer to keep face but to get repairs and delivery to port included.

 3) Get the loading shovel inspected by a third party such as MEVAS Machinery Evaluation. Probably the dealer will forget to mention some of smaller issues. The tire  description will be always better than in reality. The play in pins and bushings will be always described as good. If you pay 500€ for an inspection prior delivery you will receive detailed information about all issues. A detailed inspection report will help you to negotiate more repairs or price reduction. This way the inspection fee will be pay off anyway. MEVAS can inspect Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, JCB, Liebherr, Case, New Holland, Terex, Atlas, Volvo CE and other wheel loaders.

 4) Have the supplier to provide you with the related customs documents Usually the machine trader has good contacts to local customs offices. He can provide you easily with the required customs documents for the used loader and attachments.

5) Select the freight forwarder who can deliver the machine to port, ship it to your port of destination and negotiate shipping and handling fees with him. There are a couple of heavy equipment shipping companies available. These know all about shipping of excavators. They know what would be best port of departure and best port for importing a machine to your place. I would recommend again talking with machine supplier for support. He has for sure good contacts to local and international freight forwarders. If he doesn't want to help you ask MEVAS for a recommendation. Make sure you have the exact dimensions of the machine in transport position and the correct weight. Check if shovel attached. These factors have influence to shipping cost. Check with machine supplier if packing and delivery in a container would be an option. This is far cheaper than Ro-Ro shipping.

6) Talk to supplier or freight forwarder about the freight insurance. It would not be the first time a vessel gets into stormy weather and the buyer gets in trouble.

7) Start early talking to your local authorities about import of the used loaders and gather info about the taxes you will have to pay. It might be you have to pay import duty for used machines. This question can only be answered by your local authorities. It could also be possible you need to pay import VAT. Check these details carefully to avoid bad surprises.
